The short answer
If your simulator lives indoors, and almost every home, office and school build does, a camera based (photometric) launch monitor is usually the better technology. It measures your ball and club at the moment of impact, so it does not need room for the ball to fly. Radar shines outdoors and in very large spaces, where it can watch the ball travel and read the full shot.

How radar launch monitors work
Radar units use the Doppler effect, the same principle behind a police speed gun. They sit behind you, fire a signal at the ball, and track it as it flies away. From that flight path they calculate speed, launch angle, spin and carry.
The strength of radar is that it watches the real, full ball flight. Outdoors, on a range or a big practice bay, that is a genuine advantage. Trackman and FlightScope built their tour reputations this way, and their data is trusted at the highest level of the game.
The catch is space. Radar needs to see the ball travel far enough to read it accurately. Trackman, for example, recommends a long run of room between the unit and the screen for indoor use, and higher ceilings help. In a tight room the radar simply does not get to watch enough flight, and the first data to suffer is usually spin, which it starts to estimate rather than measure.
How camera launch monitors work
Camera based units, also called photometric, take a completely different approach. Instead of watching the ball travel, they photograph it. A cluster of ultra high speed cameras captures the ball and clubface at impact and through the first few centimetres of flight, then measures what actually happened.
Foresight's GCQuad, for instance, takes up to 200 images of the ball inside the first 30cm using four cameras. Because it reads the real dimple pattern spinning off the face, it measures spin directly rather than inferring it.
The practical upshot: a camera unit only needs to see the impact zone, not the flight. That is why photometric systems fit so comfortably into the tight indoor rooms most simulators live in, and why they are the standard for club fitting and coaching, where every degree of face angle matters.
The one question that actually decides it
Forget the spec sheets for a moment. Ask yourself one thing: is this simulator indoors or outdoors?
Indoors (a garage, spare room, office studio, school hall, a Pacific villa with the doors shut against the humidity): a camera based unit is the natural fit. It measures at impact, needs little depth, and reads short game and wedge spin reliably in a small space. This is the world nearly every one of our clients builds in.
Outdoors or a very large open bay with genuine ball flight to watch: radar earns its keep, and a hybrid unit that blends radar with a camera can be worth a look.
Most buyers agonise over brands when the room has already made the decision for them. Measure your space first, and half the confusion disappears.

What the professionals actually use
Here is the part worth pausing on. Foresight publicly states that it does not pay tour professionals to use its equipment. No free units, no sponsorship deals. And yet the GCQuad has quietly become the most used launch monitor on Tour, chosen by major winners and some of the most data obsessed players in the game.
That matters because when elite players pick a tool with their own money, and no marketing strings attached, it tells you the data stands up to the harshest scrutiny there is. They are not being paid to trust it. They just do.
A Simple decision framework
Work through these in order and the right unit tends to reveal itself.
1. Room first. Measure ceiling height, depth and width. Tight or standard indoor space points you to camera.
2. Purpose second. Casual play and family fun, or serious coaching, fitting and improvement? The more you care about club data, the more a quad camera unit earns its place.
3. Budget third, not first. Set the technology and purpose, then match a unit to your number. Buying on price alone is how people end up replacing a launch monitor within two years.
